Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, he said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
