A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian projects. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, beating predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
